Stroke

Stroke

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. It is a medical emergency that occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, or more commonly, when a blockage is developed. If one does not seek treatment, the cells in the brain quickly begin to die. The outcome of a stroke can be serious disability or death. If a loved one is having any symptoms associated with a stroke, seek emergency medical care immediately. With this said, it is important to know the signs of Stroke:

  • Sudden numbness, or weakness of the body (especially on one side)
  • Sudden, severe headache
  • Sudden confusion, difficulty speaking, or understanding others
  • Sudden vision changes in one, or both eyes
  • Sudden difficulty swallowing
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Sudden difficulty walking or balancing

If you notice any of these symptoms above, please call 911 immediately.

FAST is an easy way to remember and identify the most common symptom of a stroke.

F- Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side droop?

A- Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S-   Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?

T-  Time: If you observe any of these signs, call 911 immediately.
