Numbness / Tingling

Numbness / Tingling

Numbness and tingling are unusual “pins and needles” sensations that can happen in any part of your body, but people usually notice it in the hands, feet, arms and legs. Many things can cause numbness and tingling. It could be something as harmless as sitting with your legs crossed for a long time or sleeping on your arm. But if numbness and tingling is long lasting and persists with no obvious cause, it could be a symptom of a disease or injury, such as Multiple Sclerosis or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Some of the more serious causes of numbness and tingling are:

  • Diabetes
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Raynaud’s Phenomenon
  • Seizures
  • Migraines
  • Underactive Thyroid

Go to a hospital or seek immediate medical care if you:

  • Have weakness, or are unable to move along with numbness and tingling
  • Numbness and tingling occurs after a head, neck, or back injury
  • You feel confused or have lost consciousness
  • You have slurred speech, loss of vision, difficulty walking, or weakness
  • You cannot control the movement of an arm or leg, or you have lost control of your bowel or bladder

Contact Centennial Neurology to make an appointment if you experience numbness and tingling with no obvious cause, if you are experiencing dizziness, muscle spasms, or other unusual symptoms, if you are urinating more often, have a rash, or are experiencing pain in your neck, forearm, or fingers.
